Frustrated or Confused?

Working hard against a Retained Reflex is an Unknown Cause of Many of Dancer's and Teacher's Challenges

What are Reflexes?

And WHY is it of interest to a Dance Teacher?

Reflexes are like the blueprint our brain-body has to organize movements that help us to gain strength and coordination in the first few years of life.   They are automatic and can only be over ridden by a great deal of effort and use of energy.

There are many factors why a reflex may not have completed its process and is therefore still active in the body. This retained reflex is like having invisible puppet strings acting on the body without voluntary control.  For dancers, who are excellent at working to compensate, it can mean that there is a lot of tension in the body or an inability to gain strength.

Depending on the reflex active there are also a host of social-emotional challenges linked.
