I was a studio owner from 1999-2009 with my studio, Prism Dance Centre.   I felt ready to open and thought there was room for one more studio in the area.  So did others!  The year I opened FIVE other dance studios opened in the same area.   I guess we all had the same idea!

That means I did struggle to have enough clients.  I worked 7 days a week for 10 years and burnt myself out.  I also admit that my commitment to the studio was a factor in the demise of my 20 year marriage.  He felt I always put the studio first.  I argued, that it was not that I loved the studio more than him, but that I had simply no choice but to spend that many hours working in order to keep the business going.  I was also teaching 6 days a week!  I prepared students for RAD exams, competitions and did probably 60 % of the choreography for the show, even when I had a staff of 10. 

Why am I telling you a bit about my story as a studio owner? 

I think its important for studio owners to know that people giving advice/services actually know what they are talking about through LIVED EXPERIENCE. From 10 years in the business of owning a studio, I know from experience how hard it is on so many levels.  I know the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of studio ownership.   

  • The challenges of bringing in enough income with such a huge overhead given the amount of space needed. 
  • The additional work when you are constantly searching for and training employees. 
  • And, the stress of competing to keep students you have invested so much in to stay at your studio.

Online Classes: Optional

Keen students can take extra classes at no cost to the studio, either during the regular season or during a summer or Christmas break.  They can be taken any time and suggested to parents and students, especially exam students.

Online Classes: Mandatory

Dance competition teams have many different rules and policies for inclusion on the team.  A mandatory online class to develop specific performance skills that are only available  from The Radiant Dance Teacher are easy additions.

Tapping the Parent Market

While not all parents will be interested in taking dance classes, all parents along with their friends and extended family, are a perfect market for specific online classes designed to enhance their life through new body awareness and skills. 

Guest Teacher Income

Bringing in a guest teacher in person may not be financially feasible, but online guest teaching is quick and easy to arrange.  The price point for participation can be determined by the studio owner to go beyond covering costs. 

Private Sessions

The Radiant Dancer offers very unique private sessional work that can be done in person or online.  Connecting and suggesting these sessions can be arranged so that the studio can be given a commission to cover the cost of arranging.

To the Pointe: Beyond Exercises

This is a comprehensive Pre-Pointe Programme, which can also be used for ALL keen students wishing to hone their technique and develop skills of motivation, goal setting and fantastic self assessment and noticing skills.  This course has been designed specifically for online learning, taking into account the need for safety and accountability. 

This class can be done as an intensive over summer break, or as an ongoing class during the regular teaching season.

Online Class for Competition Students

Class time is always very precious and seems to be forever in short supply, especially when preparing for competitions.

There are unique courses available via The Radiant Dance Teacher, that are designed to be taken online by students who participate in dance competitions.

Just as rehearsals are mandatory, along with other policies unique to each studio, so can an online training session be added to the mandatory requirements.

By offering an online class to support competition dancers, no time and space in the studio is required, nor the payment of a teacher. 

Instead, additional profit can be made (the amount at the discretion of the studio owner) via an online class participation. 

Student progress and completion of the workshop or course is easily shared with the studio owner/lead teacher.

Student Retention

Keep Students Loyal thru the Summer Break

Keeping students as part of the studio and engaged traditionally is done via attendance at in person summer schools.

However, many families cannot afford a summer school or the dates conflict with family holidays.

There IS another way to keep the students involved!

ONLINE Summer Training

Students can be encouraged to continue to upgrade their skills with several online courses.  While the content will be taught by Mariah-Jane, a teacher liaison from the studio is suggested to keep the link strong and active between studio and students. 

Students will come back with new knowledge, an intact relationship with their teacher(s) and fellow dancers and concrete proof that YOUR studio is willing to do everything and anything to support them in their journey.
